What's in this issue?

Hello Kathy,

Welcome to the end of the new year!

Wasn't it just last month we were talking about our goals and resolutions for the new 2017?  Here we are fast approaching the last 100 days of that year which actually starts Sept 23rd. (or the 16th if you want the last week of the year off)  So how has this year gone for you?  Have you reached your BIG goal?

I've taken on a big goal related to my health and I- and Rennie- are delighted to say we have seen significant changes in my energy and stamina over the past 4 months.  Life is so much more fun when I can engage more fully.  I truly am enjoying life and relationships, coaching and writing with new enthusiasm. I am so grateful!

But this year also brought 'sad' things; loss, disappointments, distractions. Those are things I have spent much of this summer pondering as well.

The thought that keeps coming back to me is that this is ALL part of life; the good and bad, happy and sad, successful and not-so-successful or even failure.  The tension between these are where life happens and lessons are learned.  I should say, lessons are learned if we pay attention to those things.

So many times life blurs by.  Experiences happen to us on a daily basis that we chalk up to being random happenings. We don’t understand why something stirs such emotional reactions, such as anger, sadness, joy, etc. and we say,

“Oh, that’s nice!” and then move on through our busy day never to reflect on it again.

or “Wow!  I don’t know why that {event, conversation, etc} affected me so much!”  But we don’t take the time to answer the question we just asked.

What if we listened to our life- to the defining moments in our life that connect with the core of who we are? I dare say we would learn amazing things about ourselves. We would find answers to questions such as...

Who am I?

What's my next step?

How does my past play into my future?

LESSONS FROM MY COACH

Pondering my own story over the summer and capturing snapshots from it have shown me some answers to the questions above.  Over the past few days, I have shared several blog posts that tell some of my insights. But I have become increasingly aware of one significant story that speaks volumes - connecting my past to my present leading to my future; tying my worth to my purpose to my influence.

It is a story of my champion; a woman who walked into my life and used her unique design and story to make her authentic difference.

Her name is Jenn Wenzke, life and business coach, and the founder of the SO NOW Network of Women that I belong too.  You have probably heard me mention her before and you can go to the STORY TO SHARE blog post to read more.

From my very first conversation with her, she challenged my thinking about myself and the difference I am made to make in my world.  The first time I met her at the launch of the So Now Lima chapter meeting, her first 3 questions to me were...

Do you know your value?

Do you offer value to your clients?

Are you charging what you are worth?

Wow! Jenn had known me for a whole 5  minutes and had pinpointed 3 key areas of limiting beliefs in my life.

Was it written all over my face or something?  I don't think so.  But as I've thought about it this summer, I realized that these were questions she had to answer for herself as she took steps forward in her own life.  These were questions she has helped women answer every time she worked with a new client.

She didn't have to know me to know me!  She was me!  She was every woman who wanted to use their God given design and story to make a difference in her world. She did that in my life!

I didn't give Jenn very good answers on our first visit together.  In fact, I made some pretty lame excuses as to my value and what I charged.  Her response...

Well, I will tell you that in my next email next week.  Be sure you check your inbox next week. (it's worth waiting for!)

KATHY'S COACHING CORNER: How Do I Find MY Value?

Answers for our VALUE questions will come in different forms, in different season of life.  But determining who we are and what we value most is foundational to taking our next steps and living out the rest of 2017 with purpose and passion.

What can you do to find your own answers?

  • Giving yourself space to think and ponder on those things that happen to you on any given day that stir the core of your being is probably the #1 thing you can do.  But you don't always recognize those significant moments and you often don't know what you are looking for when you do.

To help you do that, GHC is hosting a 5 Day S.N.A.P it Challenge starting Monday, September 11 on Facebook. Find the details below or on this link.  I encourage you to join us.

I’m not charging for this coaching event.  This is something that I have found so valuable in my own life,  I want to create space for you to ponder some of these things in your own life as well. The only cost is the level of commitment you are willing to make to yourself.

  • Another exercise I use and continue to use with my clients is called ROLES & RELATIONSHIPS. This is not original to me, but it has been so very useful as I consider whether I am investing in the areas and relationships that matter most to me.  In the process of working through this, I become much more aware of what I value, as well as, my value to my world.   Use the link to get an Excel spreadsheet to help you answer some of these questions for yourself. Instructions are included in the document.

As always, if you need someone to help you process your thoughts and insights, email me at kathy@greenhopecoaching.com.  I would be delighted to walk with you in your journey!

Ever feel like life is happening to you? Maybe issues and circumstances are coming at you faster than you can comprehend. It seems like they might be important, but…we just don’t know why.

Lovely Traces of HOPE Update

  • This summer, I was honored that The GRACE TIDINGS, the magazine from my Alma mater, Grace University, in Omaha Nebraska, did an article featuring Lovely Traces of Hope.  You can view the article here.

  • My college professor, Dr Harold Berry, also sent me this note.

I am so pleased to be able to reach you, Kathy. I have just completed reading Lovely Traces of Hope. I feel like I lived through the heartache with you. Even at my age of 82 it gives me more empathy for ministering to the grieving.

Here's the note I've written about your book to be sent out when I next send a Harold's Herald and include books I've read since the last posting:

Lovely Traces of Hope inspired by Leisha Burrus (2016 ) by Kathy Burrus. Kathy & husband Rennie are 1980 grads of Grace College of the Bible (now Grace University). This is a heart-wrenching story of what the family went through after 15-year-old Leisha was struck by a car and killed instantly. This young girl was bold for Christ and wanted to be a godly influence. The affect on others after her death reveals she had greatly influenced many. Kathy’s story reveals the difficult path of those who’ve lost a loved one, especially a younger one, through death. On the same day I finished this book, I read the tribute to Cliff Barrows in the January 2017

Decision magazine. Barrows died at age 93. These two stories reveal how we need to make our lives count for Christ whether we’re in the spring or winter of our lives.

If you would like a signed copy of the book, let me know.  I have several in stock right now.  Cost will be $12.99 plus tax & shipping.
